The 2021 vintage was excellent and mild. After rains in January and February, the growing season remained dry. Temperatures were moderate and the weather optimal at bud break in April and bloom in May. Weather remained even through summer and harvest, resulting in a lower-than-average yield of small, deeply concentrated grapes. The fruit was hand-harvested between September 30 and October 8. The final blend was aged for 20 months in French oak barrels (100% new).

To Kalon is situated on prime benchland in west Oakville. The well-drained soils combine with ideal sun exposure to yield rich, complex flavors and flawless fruit maturity. The Reserve Red Blend is a traditional Bordeaux blend that highlights the best of the vintage, so the blend changes year to year. The fruit for this wine was sourced exclusively from To Kalon.

Pts. Jeb Dunnuck "The first time I've tasted this cuvée, the 2021 Red Blend To Kalon Vineyard Reserve checks in as 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Petit Verdot and Malbec that spent 20 months in new barrels. Its deep ruby/plum hue is followed by a tight, more inward red that has impressive red and black fruit, scorched earth, and graphite that turns spicier and more nuanced with time in the glass. With medium to full-bodied richness and depth on the palate, this absolute classic blend has terrific overall balance, building, rock-solid tannins, and outstanding length. A serious wine that benefits from air, it’s going to reward 4-5 years of cellaring and cruise over the following two decades. It's a classic, gorgeously complex, layered wine." - Jeb Dunnuck, January 8, 2025
Pts. Wine Advocate "Only the second vintage of this wine (the first was 2019), the 2021 Red Blend To Kalon Vineyard The Reserve is 48.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42.5% Cabernet Franc, 4.5% Malbec and 4.5% Petit Verdot. Aged 20 months in 100% new French oak, it's red-fruited on the nose—think raspberries and cherries—with just hints of leafiness, plummier fruit and vanilla. It's medium to full-bodied and concentrated, then turns more velvety on the lingering finish." - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, October 17, 2024
